It depends. I have to take a huge escalator down to the train station every night, and *most* people stand to the right, letting the walkers pass. Sometimes we have tourists who block the whole thing, but they can generally hear the walkers walking down, so they move over. If not, I'll say "excuse me" and they'll move.
When I first read your post, I thought, "Jeez...where's the fire?" lol Then I realized that I do this too. Sometimes that 30 second walk down the escalator (as opposed to standing still and riding down) is all it takes to miss the train.
It really all depends on why you want to walk. Late for work? Going to miss the train? No, not impatient. Walking because you're dying for a coffee? Have to get downstairs in the mall because Banana Republic is having a sale? Then yes...you're impatient. :)

Well sometimes old people need to rest from walking. If you are in a hurry, you can say excuse me, and move around them, but I find that rude. Just wait it out if there are people in front of you. You can walk faster on the lower level to make up the time.
I walk down if nobody is in front of me, otherwise I just wait it out. And yes, you are impatient. Think about the other person, not just yourself.

You are impatient.
The old couple was using the escalator for the exact purpose for which that device was invented... to move them from one level to another without them having to walk.
If you want to walk, then take the stairs.
If there is no option of stairs, then take a deep breath and ask yourself if the world will end if you don't get to the bottom one minute sooner. If the world will indeed end within a minute, then I think the old couple will gladly step aside so that you can save it for them.

Use the stairs if in that much of a hurry. The escalator is to stand and ride.Especialkly for people who have difficulty walking up and down.
Go use the elevator even, if in hurry.
I say it would be rude to ask them to move aside.I would usually stand to one side, though,if on an escalator because I know there are people who like to walk up or down them eventhough they are moving.

yes i think youre a little impatient, i usually only walk on the escalator when im in a hurry. thats the whole point of it - it moves for you so you dont have to. maybe you should try taking the stairs.

I think walking past someone on an escalator sounds as if it may be perceived at rude or impatient. Sorry.
