I've had one for years. There's no law against it as far as I know. Buy one and enjoy, and while you're at it, buy the book with all the frequencies that they use. Pretty interesting, these scanners....(Radio Shack has the books)

Well here in the Uk, most police forces now use digitally encrypted systems, similar (but more secure) to cell phones called TETRA.
It is imposible to pick up the police with a scanner. If you hit on a police frequency, all you get is digital squelch
If, however, you did manage to crack the code and listen to TETRA, O2 (the network provider) will give you a million pounds....
Get cracking!

I'm not sure about the scanners in Las Vegas, I do know that if you have the radar detectors in your car you can get in trouble for it. I'm going to assume, which may be idiotic of me, by your avatar that you live in Vegas. I do too. Would you keep the scanner in your car? I know that you can pick up police frequency on those CB radios sometimes and those aren't illegal.

Many private citizens own radio scanner/receivers which monitor police frequencies. They are not illegal to own. What is illegal is to possess a radio transmitter device which will operate on a police channel and allow people other than authorized governmental personnel to interfere with police operations.

In some states it is illegal in your car, but ok for in your home.
And if you are caught in the middle of a crime with one, it can add to the crime.
