It depends on whether you have a yard, and/or time to devote to training..Most Golden Retrievers are great family pets..They are adaptable to all situations..If you like something smaller, Basset hounds are good for a family..Avoid the herding breeds, as they tend to be overprotectivie and bossy.

a lab or a golden retriever they are both great with kids, they will look after your younger ones and will be great listeners/fetchers for the older ones. I have a golden retriever and she helps out with a lot of stuff like keeping a coyote from getting my cousin (age 3) when she and a friend were outside on a summer night. My friends (a family of 6) have two young kids and two older kids and they wouldn't reccomend any dog other than april their yellow lab. Golden Retreivers also have soft jaws so they are not able to bite down hard if they accidentally give a nip which is rare unless its playtime.

First, I'd recommend that you adopt an adult dog - at least 1 or 2 years old. That way, you already know the dogs personality and can choose a less dominant dog that your younger children can control and help train.

My personal favorite breed is the boxer. They are generally very good with children. While you should teach your children never to tug on dogs' tails and ears, boxers put up with this behavior patiently. Young boxers are extremely energetic, so I do not recommend adopting a young boxer (under 4 years old) if you do not have significant time to exercise your dog.

Golden Retriever!! Not a puppy though. Adopt one that's at least 1-year old because, like all puppies, they are crazy. Goldens are very very good family dogs and love children. Very loving and friendly and silly dogs they are! Find a Golden Retriever Rescue in your area. Just search it on the net.

Golden Retrievers and Labradors are very friendly dogs. Our golden is very big, the biggest I've ever seen, but he is awesome when my nieces and nephews are around (they range from 5 months to 5 years old). The kids all love him even though he's so much bigger than them. They like to play a lot and a kid will keep them occupied.

go to www. dogbreed info.com/children.htm. They have a list of dogs and a colored coded system as to what breeds are good with kids. The categories are >excellent with children
>usually good with children >good only when raised from puppy hood >best with older considerate children >not recommended for children
Great Dane, Golden retriever, bull dog are just a few examples they list.

Standard Poodles are a great family pet. They are great with kids and other pets. They are a large breed dog, med - high energy, they don't shed, and they are super smart. They also make excellent watch dogs and are easily trainable. And you don't have to do those cutesy hair styles unless you really want to.

Large breeds are definately best. Labs, Golden Retrievers etc. not quite as snotty as the smaller breeds, less likely to bite. Enjoy!!

it would depend on how big your yard is and how much time you want to put towards training a new pet.

i personally have had pit bulls for the last 20 years. mine have always been great with my kids and always been great protectors for them. they slept with my kids, they live in the house and are great companions for me and the kids.

if you dont have a lot of time and expect the kids to take care of it, then try a lab or a retriever. they love to run and play too.
