I agree with Chetco, since the dog will let you play with him in his yard, he likes you to some degree. You may also want to consider that he wants you to come into his yard to play with him and that's why he runs...he wants you to follow.

Try to get his owners to bring the dog to your house and allow him to get comfortable so he can see your house as a "second-home"

Another thing...when he's barking, is his tail wagging, is he snarling??? You can tell if it's a playful bark or a warning.

Ask your neighbors if they will come into your yard and bring the dog..If he visits you a few times with his masters, he may learn that you are a comfortable part of his world.

It might not trust you still, even though it lets you take walks with him. but WHAT I'm CONCERNED IS IF YOUR NEIGHBOR'S DOG IS ALWAYS WITH IT'S OWNER, EVEN ON WALKS!!Well, if it is then it probably wants it's owners permission first and when you're in your yard, please don't use a shovel until your neighbor's dog is inside because it might think that your going to hurt it.

Leave that dog alone. For some reason its uncomfortable with you. You maybe skated off without injuries right now.... keep pressing it, you may loose a hand. Find another "friend", but I would suggest you leave that one alone.
