well if ure shy tell one of his friends to tell him how u feels.
OR ask him who he likes and keep asking him why and why and why. Then say that you would like a boy who has... and say everything you know about the boy u like and maybe he might catch on and realize its him.
And if he asks if he is the guy, then say well maybe yes but with a SEXYER abs and you will not only get him but he will work out and stuff just to get those abs for you.

I think you should just tell him that you want to try going out with him, and if it dosen't work you still wanna be friends...but thats just me and i prefer things to be blunt, but don't do nothing about it, k.
