The latex paint that was applied over oil base paint (washed prior to painting) was noted to peel when scratched by our dog. You can actually peel off pieces. Can we sand the latex paint and apply oil base paint over the surface again or are we in for some heavy -duty work?

You're in a rough situation, but no... you don't have to peel it all off.

Scrape off loose pieces and lightly sand the edges of the leftover paint.

Then, sand the rest of the latex paint to rough up the surface.

Find a GOOD primer (pay the extra money) and give it at least 2 coats... the primer WILL seal it and prevent futher cracking and peeling.

Find a good filler (Polyfilla) and smooth away the rough edges of the leftover paint.

I would recommend applying another coat of primer over the spots that have filler on them (so the new paint goes on evenly) and then paint with your new paint.

I went through this a few years ago... and have not had ANY recurrence of cracking or peeling since then. Sometimes those Home Depot guys have good advice!

Latex Paint Peeling

Latex can be painted over oil, but never oil over latex. If you wish to paint with oil, all latex must be removed. Latex (over oil) can peel off if it is damaged as with the dog. there could have been a problem with the oil paint already on the wall.

The best way to paint latex over oil is to prime it with Kilz or similar oil primer before adding latex. It will help bond the two paints.

Oil based primer is absolutely the best choice for a damp environment like a bathroom. Latex top coat paints will adhere perfectly to oil based primer. The oil primer will seal the drywall and help prevent mildew from forming on the drywall. Oil is an excellent choice. I use this method all the time. the other answerer's are confusing latex paint over oil paint. that doesn't work at all.

I unknowlingly painted latex over an oil base paint..peeled like crazy. I called Sherwin Williams where I bought the paint and they did a test.. found out underneath was oil base. Therefore, the only sollution is to completely remove the latex and re-paint with oil base.

Get some 100grit sanding peper and start sanding, there is no other way, Even if u put oil back on top of the latex film and the latex starts to peel off whatever is on top will come off with it. Once u have sanded off the latex finish use some oil primer before putting back on the finish. At this time after the oil primer u can pur the latex finish.

remove latex...sand and peel it
Primer over the oil paint and then decide if you are going to paint with oil or latex

Removing the paint would take forever. Use a good primer and then re paint. Kilz is a great primer.

What you need to do is sand off as much as possible and then use a primer coat. Put anything you want on the primer and you should be okay.
