Look! I want to try and answer your question and we don't mean to be mean but direct in most cases...The State does not matter and the place does not matter BUT YOU DO! I am a Mother and a Mentor...I preach "Parental Supervision" Parental Responsibility". We as parents make the "Safe Haven" for our children...no matter where we live. We must guide them, protect them and keep our eyes on them...there are Predators and Misfits everywhere, every state, every place...YOU CAN MAKE ANY PLACE SAFE FOR YOUR CHILDREN! AND DON'T YOU FORGET IT.

I moved to Orlando about two years ago and had to answer that same issue for my two kids...
If your budget allows, Dr. Phillips (Southwest Orlando) is relatively safe and has some of the best public schools in Florida. Look at subdivisions off Apopka Vineland Road between Sand Lake Road and I-4/LBV. If you can afford it, there are a handful of subdivisions along this stretch that have high walls, guards at the gates, roving security patrols, etc. (Phillips Landing, Turtle Creek, Isleworth, etc.) That said, these same communities also have private parks, pools, tennis courts, etc. within those walls. If your kids will be in public schools, that is a BIG challenge in certain parts of Florida. For the K-5 classes, Bay Meadows Elementary is brand new, having first opened this past Monday, and nearby Sand Lake Elementary is only one year old. The previously combined school consistently ranks "A" in the state's evaluations.
The joke in some local circles is "What's the difference between Isleworth and the White House?" A: "The houses in Isleworth are bigger and the security is better."
The Orange County Sheriff's Office (OCSO) provides monthly crime statistics by zone for the county, which may give you some insights of value. Here are the July results:
Auto Com Res Auto
Burg Burg Burg Theft
Zone 30 21 3 11 5
Zone 31 6 4 9 4
Zone 32 23 1 23 26
Zone 33 10 3 9 11
Zone 34 18 15 41 28
The following is a ZONE Guide:
ZONE 30 ~ Bordered by Lake Buena Vista on the South, Route #535 on the West, I-4 on the East, and Conroy-Windermere Road on the North
ZONE 31 ~ From Chase Road on the East to Lake County Line on the West, and on the North by Oakland, Winter Garden City Limits
ZONE 32 ~ From Conroy-Windermere Road on the South, To Silver Star on the North, to Windermere Road on the West to Hiawasee Road on the East.
ZONE 33 ~ From Hiawasee Road on the West to the City limits on the East, North to Silver Star, On the South to Metro West & Raleigh
ZONE 34 ~ From Rt # 50 on the South, to Silver Star on the North, On the West by Powers Drive and Mercy Drive/City Limits to the East.
There are some really good areas East of the main airport as well, but travel to most businesses and leisure destinations may be a bit more lengthy from there.
Good luck and email me if I can offer additional help.

Orlando is such a tourist trap it comes with a lot of problems. Homeless beggars pounce on unsuspecting tourists, the cost of living is through the roof and affordable housing is a joke. I suggest you look within a 50 mile radius. Driving distance to work or school but not too close to the "action"
