Yes it is affection to a cat but he is also smelling your scent and marking you as one of his own. Cats are very sensitive to smells and when they rub against you they are marking you with their scent. To go a step further with this, watch a mother cat and how she behaves with her litter and how she cleans them thouroughly with her tongue. Also she will not feed another kitten from another cats litter. She will smell it and if it does not have the rcognizable scent of her litter, she will reject it. Now a good way of getting around this if you have a kitten that needs to be fed, you can try to fool the mother cat by taking one of her kittens and rubbing the kitten from the other litter with it's scent. Sometimes it works.

It's very unsanitary and dangerous for you. Cats also lick their butss all the time(it'a a cleaning thing with them) and they carry a disease which is so serious it can cause blindness years later(usually takes 15/20 yrs to show up.).
It's affection but one you can do without. Sorry:).

Hi, love to answer the cat questions...i love my cat, I'm crazy about her. I hold her like a baby and coo at her.
I am sorry to say that cats operate on instinct only.
What we see as affection is a behavior that manifests when they protect or reaffirm their food source.

I think it's because your cat considers you as part of it's property, so it is marking you, just like when it is cheek rubbing your furniture.
But I like to beleive that it is a sign of affection.

Cats are closely related to lions, who also do a similar thing with each other. When lions do that, they are establishing dominance. Your cat is asserting dominance. He might bite your nose too, not agressively, but enough so that you feel his teeth. It's his way of saying "I'm boss"

This is definitely affection. Your kitty loves you. One of my cats, C.B., does this all of the time. She is the sweetest cat! I love her so much. But anyway, yes, this is your cats way of saying, "I love you."
Enjoy the love!

Yes, he is being affectionate. But be careful, if he is playful, he may nip at your nose. One of mine does this. You get up close and you're thinking "awwww, he is so cute, and look how much he loves me.....OWWW! You little brat!"
