I recently moved into my own place and apparently the previous tenants had cats because there is a horrible urine smell coming out of the one heat vent!!! I removed the insulation that was in it (covered in urine!) I poured baking soda in it, carpet fresh, bleach and still the odor lingers!!! What can I do?! I could see if it was in the carpet but in a vent?! I NEED to get rid of this smell before winter comes because the heat will just blow that smell through out my whole house!!! Please help!!!

It's not the vent cover, it's IN the vent itself which for some reason is wood and NOT sheet metal!!! Yeah so that makes it even more difficult to remove since with sheet metal it would be on the surface whereas wood...it soaked through!

Febreeze will only cover the smell.
First try cleaning it with vinegar. (yes vinegar has an odor to it too, but this neutrelizes the urine smell)
Afterwards, you will want to clean with regular house hold cleaner. (or NOW you can use Febreeze)

The pet store solution someone suggested above works well. Pick up a new spray bottle while you are there so you can mix some of the solution with water, then spray it liberally inside the vent, soaking the side of the sheet metal. If you still smell the odor, you may try repainting the grill but it sounds as though your problem is inside the grill. Next step, pressure your landlord to put new sheet metal in the vent. Write him, telling him of your efforts in detail. Unfortunately the urine may have soaked through the floorboards next to the vent, and I don't know a cure for that except to try to spray more of the solution there. Good luck, I've had this problem twice, and I successfully removed the odor once.

white vinegar your house may smell like feet for a day or so but it should work. but if it is a removable vent you can always get another one
but if it is a spray that the cat did there is also urine behind the vent so you may need to remove it to clean inside as well

Go to a pet supply store they have cat urine spray that will remove the odor. Nothing else will work, I'm a cat owner and febreeze does not even come close to touching it.

Good luck. That is the worst smell in the world. I dry heave when I walk into someone's house that smells like cat piss.

Try soaking it in vinegar. Let it stay on for awhile and then clean with soap and bleach again and then wipe with vinegar and leave that on.

Call the landlord, and ask him to have it professionally cleaned, or you'll have to move out after calling the Health Department.

use bleach but besure that the heater is off and every one is out of the house and a window is left open
