Mostly low 30s. Higher compression engines do a bit better, highest compression engines (diesels) do the best, in the mid to high 30's.

Note that those thermal efficiencies are for high load use. Running at 5-10% of maximum (like most cars do most of the time) and efficiencies are in the 20's or less.

Add a turbo to a diesel and run at optimal rpm and you can touch on 40% thermal efficiency.

Don't know, because most people are interested in the power output from the engine, not the heat output.
