NEW DELHI - A southern Indian state on Wednesday banned the sale and production of Coke, Pepsi, Sprite and other soft drinks made by the Indian subsidiaries of Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc., an official said.
Four Indian states have already banned the sale of Coke, Pepsi and other soft drinks at schools, colleges and government offices after a research group in New Delhi last week claimed they contained high levels of pesticide residue. But the state of Kerala was the first to impose a total ban on production and sales.
The Center for Science and Environment in New Delhi said it found pesticide residues in samples of Coke and Pepsi that were 24 times above the limits set by the Bureau of Indian Standards.
The center said it carried out tests on 57 samples taken from 11 soft drink brands made by Coca-Cola India and PepsiCo India and found a "cocktail of three to five different pesticides," all apparently present in water used to make the drinks.
What do you think?

absolutely. I quit drinking pop a long time ago because I knew that it was very bad for you. Now pesticides! This is a reason for every American to get smart. Would someone actually make a drink and add ORTHO to it? Of course not. At least India is concerned about the well being of their citizens. America will never ban it because they would loose way to much money. So basically "screw the masses" as long as we're making profit. I can't imagine what lurks in other foods and drinks that we purchase daily. Doesn't that scare the crap out you? FDA approval doesn't exactly comfort me. God Bless

I think they are trying to help boost the sales of an Indian Brand, or trying to slow the growth of an American Brand. This isn't the first time they have banned these products. Why would this be exclusive to two American brands? Don't you think other products are made that are using the same water source?

No. Coke & Pepsi are bottled locally in most foreign countries -- not shipped to those countries from the US. It's a shame that Coke & Pepsi don't have higher standards for sourcing thier local water in India, but it is of no concern here in the US (unless of course Coke & Pepsi aren't careful about the water they use here, but that is unlikely).

My understanding was that they were banned because they refused to reveal the full ingredient list.
Besides... Coke and Pepsi made for India isn't made in North America. It's made in bottling plants closer in proximity to the area it's supplying. You're not drinking the same stuff.

It's probably a local problem with their production factories...but either way, I also promote to keep the soft drinks out of school...just for other health reasons as well...like sugar high, caffeine addiction etc....young kids don't need to be exposed to that

The Coca-Cola and Pepsi corporations should be concerned. The word is getting out that their products are POISON.

We all know that soda isn't good for us. I hope that USA ensures that our sodas aren't as tainted with pesticides in them as India's are. My husband and I are trying to cut down/eliminate sodas from our diet because of the high sugar, caffeine, and wasted calories. We have a daughter and want to make sure that we are going to be around to see her grow up.

every state which consider the health of its people as a fundamental right has to be concerned
why don't these cola people make something which is at least not harmful to our health, forget about making healthy drinks-it has nothing good to health in it or let them display a statutory warning that will read :contains harmful ingredients which is injurious to health!
