They are safe, and they are intended to kill bacteria. The only downside is that it causes some people to have a headache. This is usually linked to a Thyroid disorder. Most who get headaches from sulfates, also get headaches from food containing MSG. It is safe to drink, however drink in moderation, this will limit the headaches the next morning.

I can only answer your question indirectly in that I'm not sure if the sulfates in wine are safe (I didn't even know anything about them till now) but I can tell you that, at my age of 54, I've drank enough wine (and I'm not a "wino") over the decades, of all different brands and types, from the cheap trashy stuff to a bit fancier material, and I'm still very healthy, by my own observations and the doctors' as well when I go in for occasional checkups. So, I guess they're okay. Again, I'm a moderate drinker at best, so you might want to check with a heavier drinker to see if it's the sulfates or the alcohol that's "unsafe". God Bless you.

They are not safe if you are sensitive to them. People with sulfite sensitivities should drink organic wines with no sulfites added.
Trace amounts of sulfites occur in all wines, but most people can tollerate this. It's the added sulfites that really cause headache problems, just as sulfered dried fruits (the brightly-colored ones that look beautiful) give people headaches or other reactions.
A good organic wine made in California is from Frey Vinyards. They produce a wide variety of really good wines and as an added benefit - they are vegan friendly, too!
Some wines are not vegan friendly because during the purification process, egg white and/or gelatin is used. Frey uses a special type of clay and thus, the wines are vegan friendly.
There are other wines that come from Argentina, Italy, Spain and Germany -as well as the USA - that fill this bill.

In small quantities, yes, but they are partly responsible for hangovers.
But some people are allergic to sulfates which makes their effect much greater on these people. These people typically get drunk much faster from wine that has more sulfates and then they get ill. But it's not so much alcohol poisoning as it is a reaction to the sulfates themselves.

They are safe for most people unless you are allergic to sulfates.
I understand there are some wines being made sulfate free.

It depends on how sensitive you are to them. Some make me flush beet red and my face gets really hot, but at my age that happens quite a lot anyway! *LOL*
