i have heard a couple of people say that term but don't really understand it.

It's one of the sacraments. The first one is baptism, then first communion, then confirmation, marriage....I forget what they all are.

Anyway, last rites are when you're dying, the priest will come and perform this service, which is basically a last ditch effort to get all your sins forgiven so you can go straight to heaven.

(LOL at "residual sin." It makes me think of humans as leaky oil pans, with confession being like going to a mechanic, but he did sloppy work and some sin remained and is leaking out.)

Last Rites (sometimes refereed to as Anointing of the Sick or other names) is a Catholic sacrament performed for those near death. It is a series of prayers and an anointing with oils ment to prepare the spirit for the transition into the next life.

From what I understand, it's a Catholic ritual that supposedly redeems any "residual sin" an incapactitated person might not be able to make restitution for and still allow them to get into heaven. A Catholic will be better suited to answer the question though.
