99% of U.S. citizens will tell you they're not against immigration, just illegal IMMIGRATION. However, others feel that we should just let any and everybody into the United States which just isn't practical. The reason why so many support a border fence is because there are 12 million illegals (mostly from mexico) here already. We have no idea until it's too late what kind of illnesses or criminal intent some of the illegals have. Yes, we already have disease and criminals here but do we really want more of it, even if it's only one more person? Through legal immigration, medical exams and criminal background checks are required. which helps us better protect the population already here. I for one have no problem with making it easier for Mexicans to immigrate here, but we should take into account those from Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and even South America who can't simply just run across the border.

Also, I feel that those who immigrate here should try their best to learn the language to better assimilate. A few years ago I lived in Paris for a summer and yes I hung out with Americans and we spoke English. But I also watched French tv, listened to French radio, read French newspapers (except for the occasional USA Today) and by the time I was ready to come back home I was having dreams in French. Even an adult under 40 can learn the language pretty easily if they want to and there's really no excuse for someone who has lived here for at least a year telling you "no speaky english" when you ask them for the time.

There is nothing wrong with controlled (legal) immigration. Remember that people that come here illegally are not called "illegal immigrants". They're ILLEGAL ALIENS, and should be treated as such. These are the people that do not WANT to become productive US citizens. They want to reap the benefits we have to offer, period.

People underestimate how big of a project really is. I'm not going to search for the stats, but our government is spending tens of millions of dollars to put up a couple hundred miles of fence. Even if the full project was funded you would never see the completion in our lifetime. That doesn't even take into account the fact that a fence/wall is useless if it is not watched. A fence is designed not to keep people in, but to slow them down long enough to have someone get there to stop them. Take some time and think about the logistics involved in monitor a couple thousand miles of fence. Even the double fences around prisons only take about 2 minutes to scale. They have patrol trucks that stop the inmate when he first touches the fence and sets off the motion sensor. Sounds like it will work. We imagine one truck every say 30 miles, over the course of the 1,951 mile border. And even if each truck has 2 guys, and 30 mexicans hit the fence. The logistics are impossible.
What we need to focus on is how to give these people the chance to enter this country on 'our' terms. When people are locked out, they will always try to find a way in.
P.S.- More illegal immmigrants actually make it into this country by overstaying there work visas, not jumping the border.

I completely agree with you. I've gone on many rants on here about illegal immigration. I used to work in an immigration office and I know how hard it is to become a citizen, but I have nothing but respect for the ones who go through the proper channels and do it the right way. There needs to be more deportation of illegals, though. Round them all up and ship them back where they came from.

I agree we need good immigration practices, but the United States is the melting pot. Most of its residence would not be here if it were not for immigrants. My family is from Italy, they came here in the 1800's. As a matter of fact everyone I know there familys immigrated here a long time ago. Nobody says a word about the Canadians just the Mexicans, Whats up with that?

There is nothing wrong with it.
And you are right, both illnesses and criminal behaviors are a legitimate issue.
I'm a Mexican Citizen, and I have been traveling to the U.S. all my life. It is not a burden to stop by the American Embassy once a decade to renew my Visa.
I do agree so much with you that I feel that Americans should also face the same screening when traveling to Mexico. It is a two way border, you know?

There is nothing wrong with controlled immigration. The problem really is that we should limit immigration to some sort of number. Because we are already glutted with too many people that our social services (read welfare) can not support. I hate the fact that I work hard to make what I do so that there are others that sit around and do nothing. If they are coming to work and make a life and contribute that is one thing. If they are coming to suckle at Americas teat then we dont need them. Whats so wrong with asking 'and what are your plans for your immigration?'
Thats a better question

I could not agree with you more! Those who are for letting anyone in must believe that ill-egal means a sick bird.
What about these missing Egyptian students? They could be a threat and we'll never know unless they are caught BEFORE something happens. They could even be here to spread small pox which would be more diabolical than suicide bombers! We need to watch our borders way more closely than we do... and the ports too for that matter.
Have a great day!!

well i think that the law should be more selective on who can and can not enter for example look at 9 11 if we would have been more selective that may have been prevented with the Mexicans well they need to do the same for them as the rest half the time in boarder towns they work here and get food stamps and assistance and live in Mexico how is that fair to the rest of us that need that assistance and cant get it

Nothing, contolled immigration is a remarkably good idea. Maybe we can keep some of the terrorists out, who only want to live like we do, & then try to kill as many of us as they can. Maybe we can keep illegals out & keep some of our social security benefits for the people who actually earned them.
It should be on all borders, & at every port & airport...not picking on one area, all over...
