Cause they don't understand it and can't conceive of themselves not being here.

Because they really don't believe that. I would welcom death at any time as I know the next thing i see will be my sweet Saviours face. If I don't, I know I will be in the wrong place in the wrong ressurrection as I will see a lot of others that are not going up to the clouds of Heaven but have the same illness they had when they died. Then the only thing would be death in Hell. NOt eternal life as most teach. But it would end anyway and I would be no more. But I am confident I will be in the first one and be in Heaven. So come on any time.

It is in human nature to be afraid and question the unknown. Nobody alive knows what happens after death.
I do like to believe that our soules do not die when our physical bodies do. Humans are energy and that energy does not die when we do. Where does it go though, is a question I don't want an answer any time soon. I would like to know, much, much later.

Because death is far from our only possible destiny and no man knows for sure if he has reached the pinnacle of his life. There is allways hope that he will achieve greatness if he can prolong his life another day.

I think that it is a fear of the unknown. If we knew for certain what the afterlife held for us (assuming there is an afterlife), the fear would be eliminated. We are naturally apprehensive when faced with situations with uncertain outcomes. Also, we grow emotional attachments to people, places, or things and the thought on losing or never having them in our lives invokes a negative emotional response.

Because of the uncertainly of life after death. It should also be noted that not ALL mankind if afraid of death. Those wtih really deep rooted beliefs of life after death actually rush to it..or at least don't fight it off to hard. A lot of zealots have gone to meet their maker early in the name of Allah and others.

People don't wanna die because they're afraid of what they don't know. If we would know that there is some kind of life after death and that it's good, than nobody would be afraid of death and, who knows, maybe we would just wanna die to get to a better place...

Ecclesiastes 9:11 - "He has put time indefinite into their hearts..."
God's original purpose for man was to live forever (Adam and Eve) We originally weren't meant to die and as many have already mentioned, we fear the unknown. Man has always been seeking the "fountain of youth", because it's in our hearts - the desire to live forever.

Different people are afraid to die for different reasons. But the ultimate fact is that nobody gets out alive!! Everybody dies, and nobody knows when the end is coming.

Because despite a person's beliefs about the "afterlife" no one really knows what happens to us when we die and most people aren't in any hurry to find out.

Because even if people vehemently deny the existence of God, heaven and hell, when death finally stares them in the face, they know that there is still a possibility that they may be wrong after all.
