if you are using paints, mix alizarin crimson with ultramarine blue. but, not knowing your materials the generic way to create purple--as mentioned by everyone else--is red and blue. however, using equal parts red and blue is incorrect. it really depends on what materials you are using, i.e. colored pencils, markers, pastels, ect. also, it depends on the characteristics of the hue, i.e. is it a dark red/blue, or light red/blue. the characteristics of colors greatly affect how they interact with each other. nevertheless, start by adding blue to red--it is easier to make a light color darker than a dark color lighter--until you get the purple you want.

50% red and 50% blue. the more blue you add the cooler the colour will be, the more red, the warmer.

a bit of white will brighten it up. a bit of yellow (5%) will make it less bold, a little more dull (depending on how much red or blue you added it will beome a little more orange or green).

If you use oil paints, then mix some viridian green with alizarin crimson. Yup, red and green CAN make purple!
