Most Pc's use 'soft power' which still gives a voltage to the motherboard even while it is off, unless you switch it off by the plug. When you first switch it on, for a brief second everything goes at full power to check all devices are working proplerly but you definitely save energy by switching it off by the wall when not using it.

It depends. If you leave for a few minutes, putting it into suspend mode will make it better. If you're gone for days weeks on end, turning it off is best.

But either way, the more you turn a computer off and on, the faster you wear down your hard drive (but not by much). It's just a matter of convenience how loud your fan is and whether you're okay with it always being on.

Newer models can be set to go into hybernation/energy saving mode when not in use. But it would probably a good idea to turn the monitor off when you're not at the pc, as monitors suck a lot of energy, regardless if they display something or not when turned on.

Basic rule of thumb is this........
a 500w piece of equipment uses half a unit of electricity per hour, a 1 kw piece of equipment uses 1 unit of electricity per hour and so on...
What you need to do is look at ALL components that are on at any one time - none of us ONLY have a tower and monitor running, you need to take into account the printer, scanner, speakers etc......
one of the easiest ways to check consumption if you don't have wattage details is to look at your electricity meter - take a reading(A) and start your computer up, leave it running 24 hours then take another reading(B). Now turn your computer off and over the next 24 hours only turn pc on when you need it. Take another reading(C).
(B) - (A) is your consumption for on all the time
(C) - (B) is your consumption for on/off
If you cant be bothered or are unable to do any of the above an 'average' pc will use approx 1 unit of electricity every 3 - 6 hours........
Sorry if i've bored you - i work for an electricity company and deal with these enquiries daily...... LoL

Several years ago a study indicated that 15% of all electricty produced in the US was used for computers.

Yes, you need to turn them off. If you're going to use it again within an hour or so, you should atleast turn off the monitor, which uses the most energy.

It definitely uses more energy if you leave it on (if you turn it off, it's not using any at all!). How much? That, I'm not sure. Probably less than 20 Watts when totally idle, which wouldn't even be as bad as leaving a light on.

A computer uses hardly any energy or electricity at all, its the same as an energy efficient light bulb almost, just the monitor is quite energy consuming...

even if ur screensaver cuts in, in time it will just go 2 a blank screen it will in the end possibly burn the monitor out. But, it will also cause damage 2 the circuit board (mother board) with in the computer tower itself. Which could result in ur computer catching fire.

Better b safe than sorry & turn ur computer off after u have finished using it.

Not only 2 save on electric but also 2 save forking out 2 have ur computer repaired time after time.

The answer to that depends on certain things, like how long you plan to leave it on, and how big the monitor is. But if u ask me about t.v, it is true that it takes more energy to turn it on than to run it. SO if you tell me those facts i will help you find the answer

That depends on how long you keep the computer turned off for but generally yes, switch it off.
