The two most well-known tests are:

Look at the bottom of the melon where it rests on the ground. When this "color spot" goes from white to a light yellow, it is generally considered ripe.

Thumping an unripe melon will produce a metallic sound while the sound emanating from a ripe melon will be duller.

You give it a nice flick with your thumb or finger near the end of it. If you hear a dull thumping sound, then the watermellon is ripe. A high pitched sound means it hasn't ripened yet. If the sound is too dull or low pitched, then the watermellon is over-ripe and won't last long.

An unripe watermellon will be higher pitched because the inside of the watermellon is harder when it isn't ripe. As the watermellon ripens, the inside of it turns softer and the pitch when you thump it lowers.

If it's shouting and throwing stuff and leaving wet towels on the floor, it's a bad water melon and should be left where it is, Take the well behaved one thats reading quietly in the corner instead!

Sure you can, just thump it and see if sounds hollow. That's a sign of a good, ripe melon! Yum! (Also, it sounds really weird, but try eating one of the seeds. They taste just like nuts and are really good for you.)

I thump it with my finger and if it sounds like "Thunk" then I get it-I usually have good results with that. I also like the darker green rind where you can see the difference in the light and green stripes-those are usually juicier and sweeter.

I have heard that a good way to tell is how big the white spot on the underneath is and how white it is. If it is very white and pretty big, then it is a good one.

if it's really orange... small... lots of little bumps on it you know it's not a good watermelon.
