Being smart is having a broad range of knowledge in your noodle.
Being wise is knowing what to do with that knowledge. Also the ability to see and make connections where others do not.

The smart person is often rude and impatient with a simpler person and assumes a great deal of pride in their cleverness.
The wise person is polite and patient to those of lesser knowledge and most importantly is aware that though they know a great deal, there will always be so much more to learn.

I think being smart is more academically meant, whereas being wise is more to do with understanding life and being able to make good choices.
My mum used to say that some people are "All brains, and no commonsense", meaning that they are academically bright, but have no clue when it comes to making good choices in day to day life.
I think that is the difference.

Windy,
It is interesting to note what the scriptures have to say about this. Being smart, is sort of being very clever in the ways of the world. Knowing how to manage money, business savvy, being intellectually sophisticated. The Bible makes it clear, that those who are "smart" in the ways of this world, are possibly at a spiritual disadvantage. They have a tendency to rely on their own intelligence, and pay little attention to the guidance of God's Spirit. The scriptures go on to say, particularly in the Book of Proverbs, that Wisdom is to be treasured above all things. In fact, Wisdom is referred to as an individual entity, who lives in the Presence of God, and has been with Him always. She is portrayed as wanting to enter our lives and help us, but we keep ignoring her, and following the path to destruction. It is good to be smart. It makes life a little easier. It is far more valuable to possess Wisdom. It will preserve your life, and your peace.

Smart people learn from mistakes they make, wise people learn from their mistakes and the mistakes of others. Knowing what to do is smart, actually choosing that is wisdom.

Being smart suggests a level of intelligence to support you in a given situation. Wisdom, however, is the application of that intelligence to a beneficial way.
