It kind of depends on what time of day you are having your wedding. My husband and I had an afternoon wedding, so for the reception we just had veggie trays, meat and cheese platters, rolls, fruit trays, and of course cake and punch. It worked out really well for us that way...we had just a small wedding. We were able to get all of our food at Costco which saved a lot and my relatives all pitched in to help get it ready. However, if you are having an evening wedding, like around dinner time, you might need to provide more of buffet type foods. But even with that if you have a Costco around or some other warehouse kind of store, you can probably find lots of food there that would save money and time in preparing. I hope this helps.

I'm planning on having a small wedding as well. If money is not a big problem, then the thing to think about is, "How much do your relatives eat?" My family, although none of them are overweight, are what is called in my area "big eaters". They need large portions of filling foods. Not just a sandwich, but meat of some kind and potaoteos or pastas like lasagna. My fiance's family doesn't eat as much as my family, but no one will have fun if they're all hungry.
Also, it guess it depends on how long the reception will be. Buffets are probably the best bet. Everyone can eat as much as they want and there are more things to choose from, so it will make everyone happy.
Congatulations and good luck.

When is the wedding (time of day)? How long to you plan on people being there? How long of a trip is it for most of your guests?
If the wedding is at like 2pm and the whole shebang will be over by 5pm, then *nice* appetizers and some wine should be fine.
If the wedding is 4 or 5pm and you have a reception hall booked until 9 or 10, then you need to feed them a full meal.
Good luck with your planning! : )

Finger foods are appropriate for afternoon weddings. Most guests have already eaten lunch, and its too early for dinner, so finger foods would be ust fine. I would only do buffet or big meals for the later in the evening weddings when guests would tend to be more hungry. If you are having a morning wedding, a light brunch would also be ok to serve finger foods.

What matters is not if it is a large or small wedding, but the time of day the ceremony and reception are.
It is perfectly acceptable to have a non-meal reception at a non-meal time of day. Otherwise, it would be rude to not serve a meal.
We are planning a cheese and fruit platter reception at 3 p.m., after our 1:30 ceremony, just as an example.

Absolutely. Most people only expect a meal with a large or formal wedding. My best friend did a BBQ reception at the local park for about 35 people. If it's earlier in the day, you could do a continental breakfast: pastries/bagels, juice, coffee/tea, fruit, finger sandwiches.

Finger foods are fine! I've been to receptions that only served champagne and cake. Just be sure to word your invitations in such a way that guests won't arrive expecting a full meal. Something like "hor d'ourves reception to follow" will let guests know that they shouldn't expect a full meal. Also keep in mind that these types of receptions shouldn't be six hours long like most full meal receptions are.

Small wedding ceremony can have light meal, like a buffet or a cocktail.

I think it depends on what time of day the reception is being held if its in the late afternoon to evening people will be hungry and may be expecting to be fed. Its up to you though. Its your wedding and also your money. good luck!
