It seems to me that the religious right has convinced the nation that it is impossible to be liberal and religious, which is of course not true.
If you look at Jesus' teachings, the man was an ultra-liberal.
Who else would say that it's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the gates of heave? Who else would tell his followers to give up all they own to help the poor and sick?
*****************
Oh, to answer the person who followed me, the pro-CHOICE movement is all about making sure that the government is not used to force religious dogma on people.
If you read the spirit of your Christ's teachings, he NEVER NEVER advocated using the government or force to keep people from sinning. He reached out to the sinners; he didn't gather a police force to stop sin. He was very clear that his views should never be forced on another person. He also spoke of FREE WILL, a gift supposedly given by god. Now, couldn't he ask, "Who are you to take away god's gift of free will by using the power of government?"
I think the burden of proof is on YOU to show me where Christ told anyone to force people to not sin, rather than trying to convince them not to sin of their own accord.

Helping the poor and feeding the hungry does not go in the same behavioral cateogry as abortion and homosexuality. Jesus never advocated abortion or gay marriage. he would have opposed it.
While liberals lump all this together and say this is what they represent, it must be presented that conservatives do more personally to help the poor and hungry than the liberals do. For example, if you had looked at Senator Kerry's tax return, you would have seen that he gave nothing at all to the poor, with all his millions of dollars in personal wealth. However, if you had looked at President Bush's return , you would have seen that he had given $30,000 that year to the poor.
WHile the liberals "help" the poor, it is through taxation. Conservatives are the ones who have rescue missions for the homeless, orphanages for the poor, and free medical clinics around the world, and internaitonal feeding programs. The average conservative gives a minimum of 10% of their income to charity. I have been a part of this....the well known salvation army does not represent the liberal agenda. Never has. This is a conservative group. Conservatives feel so strongly that they use their own private money to help others.
The liberal agenda for abortion ("pro-death") has gone so far as to include partial birth abortion, when the baby is full term but is destroyed at delivery. This is an abomination and is murder. Likewise, the bible teaches against homosexuality, and calls it a sin. Therefore, Jesus would have condmened both practices if the subject had been brought up. Jesus, however, also taught forgiveness. Even those who had committed horrible sins, like murder, would be forgiven if they truly repented and turned to him for help with their life. The apostle Paul is a perfect example. He had persecuted people, and put them to death for their faith in Christ. However, Jesus showed him mercy, appearing to him in forgiveness, and giving him a chance to serve God. Many people think certain sins are not sins because they have been taught to believe this. This is ignorance.
So the battle cry is inappropriate... because it does not represent the values CHrist taught. Each issue has to be evaluated in light of Christ's teachings. Helping the poor is fine, but Jesus expected people to do this on an individual basis, and this was demonstrated in the book of Acts, where people brought all their belongings together and shared what they had with others less fortunate. He did not advocate raising taxes. Also, Jesus prayed in public, and in private, and never advocated that public prayer be removed, with only private prayer allowed behind closed doors.

You are co-opting Jesus on the left.
Jesus never spoke of the issues you place of the right. He only spoke of "some" of those issues you place on the left. He met with the poor and sinners to to give them hope and love. The issues on the right are those of the Pharisees and Sanhedrin that Christ despised.
Jesus is not on the left or the right.
I fully agree with the words of Jesus from the Bible "helping the poor, or feeding the hungry". You go too far, like the right you disdain, when you add other politically liberal issues, such as pro-choice, same sex marriage, etc.

I hear the battlecry, but I don't hear an anthem! And you'll need a flag of course. I aggree with kenhallonthenet, by definition, a fundie can't ask certain questions. Nor can the consider anwers to many others.
It is sad, the commercial interests promote TV broadcasts that reflect their own commercial mindset. It gives a distorted view of most Christians, who don't have such a voice. You are right, Jesus was ultra-liberal. Institutions have put his teachings in a tight box. Go for it, spread his words. But give credit, where credit is due...

Excellent question. I have yet to hear a religious fundementalist Christian answer the question, "who would Jesus kill?"
Where is the compassion and caring that Christianity is supposed to be about? All I see on the GOD channels is Americans preaching about how Jesus wants you to be rich, send in more money for salvation and other obscene bastadisations and perversions of the true Christian faith.
I would love to see the faces of these religious perverts when they are turned away from the Kingdom of heaven for taking the Lord's name in vain.

Scuse me sir but all of God's people want to feed the hungry and clothe the poor. I would say us Conservative Christians are doing a pretty darn good job at it too. Every "Evangelical" or Conservative Catholic group that I know or feeds and clothes the poor, every church and mission. in this state is full of "conservatives that feel it is their duty to work at soup kitchens, outreaches. bread distributions, clothing drives, mission trips.
Most liberals I know want the government(and all of it's WASTE)to take care of all this. WE do it ourselves. My kids have personally donated clothing, worked at a soup kitchen, a recovery center, distributed bread, donated money, and been on Mission trips and we don't have much ourselves.
Yeah we have heard from the left. They are totally loosing it. Buying completely bogus conspiracy theory's and driving their huge SUV's and complaining about the environment, while living in their McMansions and ruining all of that habitat and wild land.
Meanwhile us conservatives are banding together to stop the holocaust of the unborn and the old. Never would God condone taking the life of the weak instead of protecting it.

I would be curious to hear how they use Jesus' words to defend pro-choice. I can see the other things, I have even supported gay marriage using the Bible, but I can think of no way how the Bible could be used to support pro-choice. If you get a chance can you send me the arguments in an e-mail for pro-choice as supported by the Bible.

No where will you find words uttered by Jesus that implicate that the killing of newborn children is acceptable. The relegious left are hypocratic in this aspect. Oh yes we hear it and it is the cry of the delusional. For this reason alone the left should be considered as being mentally ill. When they can make their stance reflect thier so called beliefs it may be time to listen. Until then SHUDDUPAYA FACE!!!!
