Here is what I do... It might sound silly, but it works for me! I would go to a library basement with a big glass of coffee, and spend 10-15 hours straight... No getting out, no calls, no anything..except going to the washroom!
Here is a less extreme step.. Try to solve some problems in that particular subject, and when you get some confidence, you will feel like solving even more problems.
If you feel like doing something else, then try to set goals. If you get done with (this much) you will be spending 1 hour watching tv or so on..
Hope this helps...

Go to the Library. Trying to study at home with a TV or stereo on, kids (or anyone else) running around, etc. etc. is just an exercize is foolishness.

And don't try to study for 8 or 10 hours straight. There are very few people who can maintain focus and concentrate on something for more that 30 - 45 minutes. I, myself, can sometimes push an hour, but only if it's math and only if it's intensely interesting

Take short breaks (10 - 15 minutes) ever half hour or so. For myself, I stand up, stretch, go out on the patio for a cup of coffee and a cigarette, and then go back and hit it for another half to three quarters of an hour. Repeat as required.

And *NO*. I'm *not* recommending that you drink coffe or smoke. That works for me. What works for you will be whatever works for you. Just something to occupy 10 - 15 minutes and let your brain 'relax'

If you haven't, take up a part time job, or join a sport and/or club. That way, you will have less time to waste on not concentrating. When you aren't participating in extracurriculars, you will only have time to study, therefore, be able to concentrate better.

There have already been some good answers listed so this is just in addition. Somthing thta really helped me ina boring class I had was getting a study partner. I would read half the material and he would read half and we would explain it to each other. This forces you to really focus on what you are reading because you need to understand it well enough to explain it to somone else.
