Actually John is distinguishing between what is and what ought to be. Men aspire for light but prefer darkness to hide the reality. We are scared of the truth, but we pursue the truth as a goal.

Ken,
I love God because I decided that He knew my sins already. I made the choice not to pretend. Those that hate God must have chosen to believe that He existed. At least that hurdle is passed.
But to know that Jesus died for all of those sins, and that if anyone choses to follow after Him, and trust Him to get you through life on earth with the promise of life afterwards, there wasn't anything that you couldn't overcome.
Through the relationship that ensues between the believer and God, growth occurs. And the life that He provides becomes more important that anything else on Earth.
So the hatred of God becomes understood as one of the products of the sin nature in us. As the believer comes around to accept God's ways more and more, the battle between the sin nature and the Holy Spirit's influence continually rages.
While in faith, Christians overcome and move forward from faith to faith. That is a Christian life. That is the narrow path that is before a man of God.

Because there is no god. Evil happens in the light as well.

I resent being called evil because I don't believe in YOUR concept for a Supreme Being. I happen to be a very ethical person, as atheists tend to be. There are better reasons for rejecting YOUR god: It's unproven and a poor concept for God. We need to do better.

Men and women that do not love God are addicted to themselves. They believe that all issues can be solved through their own self-righteousness. They believe that they can go it alone without God. They believe that their failures to resolve the issues in their lives are the fault of somebody else, not their own. Instead of placing their trust in God, they place their trust in people and the institutions that people build. Disaster is the result of this recipe. Jesus loves everybody and is willing to help all that seek him. The problems of life can only be solved by turning them over to him in faith.

"Men" means mankind, humans. And it doesn't say that no man loves god. It just says in the past men have loved darkness. It's a warning, telling us to love light, to love God and not Darkness.

In Christianity, God is male, and homosexuality is a sin, so MEN cannot love their God.

Using a book that I don't consider reliable to prove a god that doesn't exist has no effect.
