It is a sign of supplication, like you're pleading for something. Why do you call God "Lord"? Comes from feudal terminology. King of Kings; Mary, Queen of Heaven; Prince of Peace, etc. This was a hierarchy people could understand and were familiar with when Catholicism was taking hold. You're praying (begging, really) to something that has power over you, just like the kings and queens had.

The bowing of one's head, and the praying with hands palms together or folded, was invented by Sunday School teachers to keep kids in their charge silent and not picking on others during prayer.
(Actually, that's just a Christian urban legend, but makes sense to me...)

Its called the silent clapping position. They are praying, but really, deep-down, they just can't wait for the sound of the tambourines, the smiling faces, and the jumping up and down and that ever-so-good inside feeling. And all that of course predains the clapping.
People pray because they don't know how to think.
People clap because others do.
Anyway, that's what I believe. Please don't stone the atheists.

It is just a tradition - a sign of respect of sorts. But it isn't a requirement. You don't have to do this or bend down on one knee. You can pray any time, any where.

Hello Peter,
I think that was a really good question,,,,,,, Yikes i didn't know why, but it was interesting to see some answers. I do however think you can talk to Jesus how you want innit any time any place anywhere, and if ya want it could be with your hands in any direction.

Good question. Some people raise their hand or hands in the air or bow their heads with hands together.............it's really all to the worship of God isn't it?

It's like an antennae that directs their thoughts/prayers upward toward god.
It doesn't matter anyway 'cos I know he's not up there - he's in Las Vegas with a $10 ho'
