Thank goodness cjmacri answered this question. It's all about pigmentation. Whoopi is African American, many African Americans have darkly pigmented gums. The girl that sited webmd.com is proof of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing. I'm glad she looked it up to help someone, but in this case she made something perfectly normal seem really scary. Caucasian people typically have gums (gingiva) a healthy pink color. If they are puffy and red or even purplish, they have gingivitis - inflammation of the gums - and that's not healthy. African Americans can have any range of pink, to purple, to almost black gums and often be perfectly healthy. Give cjmacri the points for the best answer.

As with skin, gums can have racial pigmentation. The melanin in the gums can cause them to be black, brown, or darker shades of red. "Pink" refers to Caucasian gingival pigmentation but may not be normal for African Americans, Hispanics, Middle Easter, Etc.
Now if they used to be pink and now their black, that's a whole different Oprah.

Actually black gums used to signify royalty in Africa. Alot of people belive that if you have black gums you are a decendant of royality.

i think that your gums are supposed to be pink. her gums are gross. black gums are not a good thing.

It could be from smoking. I AM NOT TRYING TO BE RACIST BUT colored people have black gums i think.
