Why are Christians offended by someone who doesn't believe in God? Why don't you just leave the Atheists alone? Could it be that just like them, you are trying to understand the other side of the coin? This is a place people come to find answers. Not always the right ones, but, at least a start.

Because they never leave the athiests alone. That was a very general statement, don't you think? Not all athiests get all worked up over talk of christianity, and not all christians force their religion on others. Come on now, you can't make a statement and ask a question like that and expect a decent answer. Try asking it in a different way. Here, I'll show you: "Calling SOME Athiests: Why do some of you get worked up and offended when the topic of conversation is focused on religion or spirituality?" See, that was much better, and not offensive to the other half of the spectrum. Did you know that generalizing is one of the biggest problems in English class? Yes, at university they teach you not to do that. Guess you didn't make it that far, huh? Good luck with your non-christian bashing.

Yeah, I see a lot of questions on here downing Christians but I have yet to see Christians downing other people with their questions. I mean, if we address an Atheist it's out of love cuz we don't want to see them go down the wrong path. We were called to be "fishers and men". But, when I see an Atheist question it's full of hate and disrespect. Why do they get so offended about our belief? It's like they are trying to prove to themselves that God don't exist. I mean I don't believe in aliens but I'm not going to get offended and down talk those that do believe. If that's their belief then so be it.

I'm offended when Christian churches try to manipulate MY people into doing or not doing things in the name of a fantasy (the existence of a fairy tale character who has never given REAL, scientific proof of himself). I'm offended when you claim God says such and such behaviour is sinful (homosexual relationships, abortion, divorce and marrying again, and other conducts like those, which unlike murder or robbery, can hurt nobody). And then, by the power of Christian Churches in the Occidental world, you make most of these absurd prohibitions into laws to be observed alike by everyone (those who believe, and those who don't). So, it's not true that you leave us alone, and that you don't interfere with us. And that's why I've declared war on religions. Not the wars with weapons and bombs that are declared in the name of religions, but a pacific war to set the world free from religions.

I don't get bothered by someone professing their belief in God. Actually, I say "Go for it." We all need something to believe in, I think, if only to give us a reason not to behave like animals all of the time.

I believe that there is no God, and so I must act in such a way that all I do benefits society, because society in the grand sense is what lives on after I am gone.

Others believe in God or several gods, and act in such a way that what they do benefits society, because that's what God wants. Either way, we all strive to be good people usually.

That being said:
What I don't appreciate is having religion, or religious services, shoved down my throat. I don't like public prayer, because it's basically somebody else saying, "Pray to God or shut the hell up." I don't like people saying this country was founded on Christian ideals, because that's not true. Some of the greatest early leaders of this country weren't even Christians - they were Deists (like Thomas Jefferson). The COLONIES were founded mainly on Christian ideals, but this country was founded on ideals of equality among all religions and no religion.

I don't like religious ideas being passed off as science, like in the study of intelligent design. There is no research behind it, it doesn't belong in science class. Scientists don't know everything, science doesn't know everything - but we aren't afraid to say "we don't know." That's far less dangerous than saying, "God is a mystery, stop asking questions."

I don't go out of my way to push anyone around or force my beliefs on anyone else. I merely expect the same out of others.

Christians have a mandate to convert non-believers. Some people take this to heart and repeatedly try to convert everyone. They are rarely subject to this behavior from others. Read anton levy's nine satanic statements and see if it offends you. Now imagine someone knocking on your door and quoting them to you, time after time after time. Then you will begin to understand why people are upset.

You don't see jews or buddhists go knocking on doors of people's homes. You don't see atheists going to a church and preaching that God does not exist. You don't see satanic scriptures in hotel rooms. Your children aren't coerced into reciting a pledge of alleigance to a country under vishnu daily. Who should be leaving whom alone?

You are distorting things, as usual. My sister shoves her Christianity down my throat, if I allow it. I've just quit speaking to her...again for the 3rd or 4th time. I took Bible History in college. I was discussing something I learned in that course with Mom when Sis jumped down my throat and was outrageously insulting. Poor Mom didn't know what to do. She is a Christian but doesn't force it upon anyone. I am a college graduate, and I study much on my own, so my opinions are well-informed, but Sis dropped out of high school and only associates with morons and imbeciles. Her 2nd and 3rd husbands were both alcoholics and retards. Mom laughs about some of the things people have said at Sis' church, for they are pitifully ignorant. How about you Christians leaving us alone? That is the problem! I've seen letters in newspapers and magazines from Christian fanatics who say outrageous things. Several have told non-Christians to leave the country and tried to pretend separation of church and state doesn't exist or is some liberal judges' collective opinion. I reply to such hateful nonsense. I allow anyone to have his opinion, but I don't allow him to shove it down my throat. If you want to be left alone, leave others alone, and tell all of your pals to do the same. You are not a holy martyr. Don't provoke quarrels with such hateful utterances as this stupid question!

Most of the atheists that I know are upset by the spending of public funds to support a religious practice. They also feel that a public display of a selected religion - while forbidding the display of another religion is wrong. They also feel that the laws that are based on a given religion and yet are forced on people who do not share that religion are wrong. As far as private conversations or discussion about religion I know very few atheists who are offended by that.

I am in no way offended by anyone who believes what they do. I am a decent person and most people who are atheist truly are. They don't care what you believe as long and you don't push it on them. We all believe in the freedom of choice and that we are not inherently evil when we are born.
I think that anyone who is mean just to be mean is well a meanie and I applaud the atheist who will truly answer this with no mean comments

No offense, but when they talk about god to me, most people adopt a very condescending tone. At the end of our little "chat", they say, well, it's just too bad you're going to hell. Why aren't theists ok with the notion of privately practiced religion? What is so bad about leaving your faith related views on the inside of the church and leaving the rest of us in peace? Does it really affect your faith when god is put on our money and in the pledge? Why can't you just leave us atheists alone? I feel like I live in a theocracy every time a politician or leader panders to the religious, or quotes the bible in congress. Your faith is just that, yours. Please do not attempt to share it, we don't want it.
