Save the Date announcements just let everyone know what date you will be getting married on, and usually include the words "Invitation to Follow" or something like that.
They are generally sent out 12 to 9 months before the wedding, and while a lot of people are doing them these days, they are really mostly for those couples getting married on holiday weekends or who will have a lot of out of town guests (as they need more time to make travel plans).
Good luck!

No. Save the dates are used to tell people to reserve the date way in advance, so people can request off work, and make travel arrangements. Invitations actually give all the invitation details.
But you're right-- you can't un-invite someone after you have sent them a save the date. That would be super rude.

No, save the dates go out way before the wedding. A good idea is to make save the date cards into magnets. That way people put it on the frig and don't forget! Then six to seven weeks before the wedding you send out the invites

I have never heard of "save the dates" but it does sound familiar to a wedding invitation. I am getting married next May and now I have another question to ask my fiance; What are save a dates? Ha!

No, they aren't the same. Save the date cards are sent out to let people know when your wedding is coming up so that they have plenty of time to make travel arrangements. They're really good for out of town guests or a very large guest list.
They're aren't always beneficial, though, because of how long before the wedding you need to send them out. There is no changing the guest list after you send out the save the date cards. Also, if your guest list isn't too big or if most of your guests are close, then they're just an extra expense. I didn't send them out; I made phone calls to the guests who would be travelling to tell them about it myself.

save the date cards are sent out like a year ahead of time, they are good if you're having lots of out of town guest so they can plan for the trip, the actual invitations are sent out 6 to 8 weeks before the wedding.
many people dont use save the date cards, i didn't because we didn't plan that far ahead of time. we're getting married in october and we just started planning about a month ago.

Not really. Save the dates are more like invitation warnings.
