It's a myth that it makes your hair fall out...but it certainly isn't beneficial to your hair :)
To everybody else...she didn't ask about salt WATER. She said SALT.

OK, I think the question is, why do you want to put salt in your hair? If you're thinking it would help strip some built up off of your hair. Try mixing equal parts of shampoo, and baking soda. Leave on a few minutes. Rinse, and condition. My other suggestion, would always use a salon shampoo and conditioner. They are more expensive for a reason. The facts about some of the other shampoos out there, can be really scary. The ph balance is high, and can actually damage hair. Just thought you might want to know.

Depends. Are you planning on putting salt water in your hair daily?
If not, it's not going to do terrible damage to you hair.
If you're moving to California and planning to spend a lot of time at the beach, I'd wear a cap.
Salt water will seep into your hair and with the mixture of the sun will cause it to dry out terribly. Split ends will be more in abundance...and if it goes too long without proper treatment, it can break off.

Why would you? Salt water is safe, if that's what you're asking. I don't know about just sprinkling salt in your hair though.
