Carlos is a master of controlled sustain. It's partly in his hands, how he encourages the string to keep moving. But a great deal is really being able to play the amp. If you watch concert footage, he always finds a sweet spot in front of his amp and marks the stage. Then he comes back there when he needs the long notes.

A big part is that he keeps the treble rolled back, which lets him get closer to feedback without the screeching.

I've seen him doing "Blues for Salvador" with just a keyboard accompanist that was just incredible. It was really easy to hear the interplay he has with the amplifier.
