Anyone who follows the true teachings of Jesus Christ is a saint.
We call ourselves Latter-Day Saints to distinguish from the saints in Christ's original church that he organized while he was living on the earth.

Latter day saint is a term used by Mormons to describe themselves. A saint in their terms being anyone who is a follower of Christ. Has nothing to do with canonised saints at all. Catholics are the only ones with saints that are canonised and prayed to. The term Latter day meaning that mormons believe that these are the last days of the world before the second coming of Christ. but according to them its been the latter days since the mid 1800's.

Saint
The word saint is a translation of a Greek word also rendered “holy,” the fundamental idea being that of consecration or separation for a sacred purpose; but since what was set apart for God must be without blemish, the word came to mean “free from blemish,” whether physical or moral. In the N.T. the saints are all those who by baptism have entered into the Christian covenant (see Acts 9: 13, 32, 41; Rom. 1: 7; 1 Cor. 1: 2; Philip. 1: 1; 1 Pet. 1: 14-15)

Mormons believe that the church that is established today is a restoration of the original church that existed in Christ's time. So, the Church of Jesus Christ would be the church that existed when Jesus was on the earth. After his death, there was a loss of truth. When this truth was restored, to delineate between the restored and the original (though I'm not sure why this was important), they added of latter Day Saints to the name.
For a Mormon, a saint is anyone who is trying to follow the teachings of Jesus, i.e. a Christian.

Latter Day Saints are mormons. They are not actual saints who are canonized, like in the Catholic church, but they call themselves saints, presumably like Paul referred to Christians as saints.

These "latter day" saints are called "latter day," because an "angel" appeared to J. Smith and told him that the Bible was mistranslated but JS was going to save the day and retranslate it "properly"; thus they are called "Latter Day Saints" because they were "set straight" by an "angel" who just so happened to NOT proclaim that Jesus is Lord as the Bible says is the only proper way to "test" that an angel truly is sent by God.

An over-simplification, perhaps, but accurate.

Funny how that angel gets around. That angel also said the same things to the JW, 7th Day Aventists, Christian Scientists and Mohammad, you know, Islam? I wonder, then, if that angel is out there teaching these guys that the Bible is mistranslated and giving them the proper translation, why all those books are so different from each other?

Have to say Mormon...Part of their belief system is that we're all Saints in the here and now...In other words Latter Day (defined as the present days). That's what it means. Has nothing to do with the Cathiloc concepts of sainthood.

Latter Day Saints are what Mormons call themselves. Cannonized saints are Catholic. Two different entities, my friend.

The Bible tells us that ALL followers of Jesus are saints:

2 Corinthians;
1:1; Ephesians 1:1;
Philippians 1:1;
etc.

It is not reserved for Mormons, nor for dead Catholics that supposedly did "miracles" but weren't noticed until after they died.

IT MEANS A MORMON!!! That is what they call themselves, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Why can't you accept that answer?

They changed the official name of their organization to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. That's all a LDS is, a Mormon.
