It would then no longer be their territory, but more than likely someone else's.

So, the real answer is not to mark "their" territory, but to claim territory, whether it is theirs or not. Little buggers want to own every place they go. And to write "I was here"...much like many of the people on Yahoo Answers.

Oh yes, but it depends on the dogs perception of his rank in the pack order. If the dog is a dominent wannabee, will pee on every vertical surface. If the dog is dominent, will pee selectively because is just announcing or relieving himself & not out to prove anything. If the dog smells urine of a truly dominent dog, may not pee until finds a place with non-dominent dog urine. If the dog is a fraidy cat, often won't pee at all when out of own territory unless absolutely has to...
Once I had a middle pack order dog & lived in a residential area of a city (sidewalk walks). Over a period of time noticed dog would never ever pee on one side of a certain block to the point I would need to cross the street before the dog would pee (who wants to be out in below zero with a dog that will not pee?). Finally one day the next year we happen to be there when the owner came out--with two enormous male dogs of a fighting breed. My dogs tail went down immediately when the other dogs came into view. To a dog, pee talks!

Hi, they use lamp-posts and things to let other dogs know they are around and also to sniff out any other dogs who have been there, not just for marking their territory and so, if another dog has already pee'd up the post then it is almost given that your dog will cover that scent with his own just to announce that he has been there. Its a bit like a "doggy message board". Hope this helps

Yes they would. It would mean that the dog is now marking new territory.
