Male dogs tend to pee on a vertical surface when one is available because by doing so, their scent is closer to "nose level" to other dogs. You probably already knew they were marking their territory, but by elevating their scent on a vertical surface, they're advertising just a bit more clearly. Pretty smart little buggers, aren't they?

I just love it when people generalize. Not all dogs pee against a tree or whatever else they decide to. Just males, and they do it to establish territory. Females just squat. They don't lift their legs. My dog just happens to be unusual. There are only so many trees in the yard, and he has marked them all, so now he pees on the grass in the yard, and when I take him for a walk, he pees against any object, whether it be a telephone pole [his favorite] or a garbage can or ???

Probably because another dog has peed there and they want to mark over the other dog to show that it is there territory. If you are talking about a dog that is in a fenced in yard, it is to remark their territory, so that other dogs can smell it when they enter the area.
