Here's the thing. You really want to do it legally. A couple of months ago three Iraqis were picked up illegally north of our southern border with Mexico, and they said they wanted to apply for asylum.

However, they hadn't 'turned themselves in' they were 'caught' if you catch the difference.

The judge put them in JAIL. Basically, he said they went through three countries that all had American embassies where they could have applied for asylum, and they didn't do it. He didn't believe that their intentions were good.

I say that because I am going to give you a link to a Wall Street Journal article where someone did come illegally, but went straight to a military outpost and turned themselves in, and it worked out so-so for them (they aren't in jail, but it looks like their kids aren't yet in school, either.) I don't recommend THAT part of this article at all.

It looks like visas are handed out for the usual reasons, and then there is a POSSIBILITY of asylum if you qualify, but it looks like they haven't quite figured that part out yet.
