I don't do this very often but once in a while I need it. Am I bad?

If you are bad, then I am bad too...LOL

I'd say if you really need the day off, as we all do once in awhile, then it totally qualifies as a mental health day (as in, preserve my mental health!!!)

Enjoy your day off!!!

All these people that say, take a break you deserve it, you need it etc ~ well surely that is what holidays (vacation) is for?

I suggest that as well as taking one larger break you take a regular day, maybe one a month that you know will help to re-vitalise you.

To my mind if you knowingly play hookey you are cheating your employer and I also feel you are cheating yourself. Sure there is a difference between being absolutely sick and can barely move out of bed, but you will know it. And if you feel bad that is because you know you deserve it.

Ok I'm biased because I am an employer of a very small company and if someone lets me or a colleague down at very short notice then everything goes up in the air and there can be repurcussions ~ project deadlines missed, lost business.

If I could prove that someone was regularly taking mental health days (whatever these are) then I would very quickly be looking for someone to replace them.

Im a 25 year old femaIe (I look sorta young and sometimes get mistaken for a highschooler) and I teach highschool kids with behavior problems (the cream of the crop).....so, needless to say, I take quite a few "mental health" days to keep from killing them.

I always feel bad because my parents brought me up to tough it out all the time, but I have come to the conclusion that its not a bad thing at all.

Not at all. Right now, I'm in a job I love, and I've been there for over 1 1/2 years, I've taken one mental health day. Jobs I didn't like, it was more often.

Depends on the job. I use to work for these two companies where I would call in sick almost 3 times a month. Now that I work for a better company I never call in sick unless I'm really sick. I come into work sick if it's not that bad.

You may need to get a new job if you are faking sickness to get away from it. Trust me it will make you feel a lot better.

Hardly ever now.( maybe two years ago?) I used to when I was in school once or twice a year.

And no! you are not bad. Sometimes you need a stress break from the daily grind.

once or even twice is normal, but dont get into the habit of it, that is bad! Its even more important in the workplace. Youre okay now just dont make a habit of it and make sure you enjoy your day off to the fullest extent just in case it back fires, you can always remember that it was so worth it!

I don't play hooky all day. I do take long lunches from time to time to recharge and keep myself sane.

Nope. Sometimes you gotta have a sense of "ownership" with your body and soul and need to chuck the whole system! Having said that, I only play hookey one or two days a year:) Have fun.
