Yes I do that as well!
Now I just whack it on the edge of the counter instead of peeling the wrapper off. Less stress that way.....and the whacking is sort of therapeutic actually.

The problem lies with the uncertainty of the popping of the tube. In your mind, you know that you want it to pop, and that it has the ability to pop, but you still know that there is a chance that it will not pop, in which case you have to stab it, or beat it on the sink until popping occurs. This uncertainty is what causes the "jump" when the tube pops, leaving you with a slight sense of both satisfaction, and relief.

I don't think it's funny at all - I get really scared by it sometimes! There are times when it has really popped badly - I don't know if it depends on the specific product or not. Sometimes, after a bad experience with one, the next time I get my husband or son to do it. Even when I hold it as far away from me as I can, I still get spooked. You'd think that with all the technology in the world, they could figure out another way to do this! Thanks for asking the question - I thought I was the only one!

Have you ever had an eye exam. They do that little test where you look into the scope thingy and they blast a puff of air into you eye. Then they want to do the other one and expect you not to flinch, and you have to strain to keep your eye open. Ya, pillsbury tubes are kinda like that for me.

My g/f practically runs out of the room when I do it. She says she can't stand the sound. I guess 'cause even though you're expecting the pop...it still comes unexpected...if that makes any sense.

Yes, this is very scary to me. Sometimes the dang thing just blows up in your hand and you haven't even removed all the paper. Then the other times you have to beat it to death to get it to open.
