I am a nice guy and I go out of my way to make a girl or woman feel special about themselves , ie compliment her, open doors, etc...
But I know girls that date total a**holes and they get treated like crap and they continue to stay with that person.
What gives??

There are many reasons why a girl might seem to choose to date a bad boy over a nice or good boy.
1) it is possible that although the bad boy might seem like bad boy to you isn't really to the girl;
2) girls sometimes are simple fooled by a bad boy at first that he is something that he is not and they are not always very quick to realize that the best thing they should do for themselves is get out
3) some girls just suffer from low self-esteem and think its just important to be with someone even if the guy treats them in a terrible manner
4) some girls are interesting in being with a bad boy over a good/nice boy because they think being with the bad boy is simply going to be more exciting - whether that is right or wrong;
5) some girls think being with the bad boy is good for their images
6) some girls are simply bad girls and want to be with bad boys
7) some guys who think they are nice really aren't nice to girls
What you have to realize is what girls really want is a guy who is part bad (but not a jerk) and part a nice guy - but not one or the other- that is the definition of a good guy. Try being a good guy and see how it goes.
btw - I was going to list more things - but the key is to understand that every girl is different too and there is no one formula that works on all - no matter what books on the subject matter might tell you - just be confident in yourself and that is the biggest key to success.

Girls lean towards the bad boys; it really sucks for you guys sometimes...but I'll have you know that there are girls who do stay away from those guys and always look at you guys as gentlemen and definitely awesome people. I'm a nice girl who definitely wants a nice guy. Don't lose hope! Keep it up! It's rare to see that kind of gentlemen type attitude anymore.

this is going to sound humorous as He** yet right here we go. There are adult adult males accessible that have had beautiful ladies and had no longer something yet problems with them. I have a few theories..
1. nice guys are boring.
2. girls feel like they have something to prove to jacka$$es, they feel that if they hang around enough, they'll win him over and he'll start treating them better. Nice guys like them too easily and there's no challenge.
3. girls have no intention of staying with the jacka$$, but he's fun to date, and women end up settling down with the nice guy in the end.
Then again, I am a guy so by definition I have no clue what I'm talking about when it comes to understanding women.

Those are girls with issues, girls who need to feel "protected", and valid, I like a variety of men, I've dated bad boys but not because I wanted to marry them, but because they are hot, but I would never pick a a#$hole over a nice guy, its all about being young and exploring the possibilities

Your problem is that you are trying to hook up with the wrong girls. A lot of girls want a nice guy, but you're probably overlooking them because they're not as exciting and sexy as the girls who like the jerks.
The problem stems from both sides.

Because we think that we need them and that we can magically turn them into a "nice guy". We know who's really a nice guy, but we choose not to accept it even though we spend the greater part of our lives trying to find a "nice guy". We know they're a**holes, we just don't want to accept it.

Well so many girls like me go through abuse and we are afraid to go with someone that will treat us right. We are so use to relationships that are not good that we don't really know who Mr. Right is. But if you keep on looking you will find a girl that will be good for you.

It seems that they want a challenge. as you get older thought the nice guys usually win. Stay true to yourself, you will get the right girl.
