Or Mary...

Yeah, that rock or cornflake or piece of fabric or not in a tree may look like it has blotches that looks like it could be a face. Sure, I see how you can see that. But what makes it Jesus or Mary?

They are looking for physical evidence of their religion, I believe.

People are prone to see faces in patterns though. However, I don't know how these people know exactly what Jesus or Mary looked like! The modern white Jesus and white Mary isn't accurate. Furthermore, the first artistic interpretations of Jesus did not show up for at least a hundred years after his death, and they all showed a beardless youth!

Desperateness. They truly want to believe that God has touched their lives personally for some special reason. My cornflake could look like Dennis Rodman or David Hasselhoff, but every religious fanatic will say it looks like the Virgin Mary or Jesus.

What makes it more strange is that nobody knows what Jesus looked like due to the fact that the people who wrote about him didn't bother describing him. The same applies to Mary. These images could look like whoever you want them to look like. Pick someone.

I was directing workers in my yard and saw that my dogs poop had what looked like a face on it. I called one of the workers over to remove it and he fell to his knees and started crossing himself and mumbling in the gibberish he calls a language. Long story short, I had lines of people down the street waiting to see the miracle for three days, until the sun dried it out. They tried to keep it fresh by spraying it and building a shaded shrine, but the sun and heat won out. My lawn was torn to shreds and my neighbors are all upset for letting "those People" into the neighborhood. Next time, I'll poop the dog at the church down the street and let them deal with it.

Because they're devout, want to believe that they're favored, and are desperate to see a miracle of God. Maybe they need proof or confirmation, I don't know, but that's what I think.

Religious hysteria. It's found often in the Hispanic Catholic crowd.
