Although it looks like any other airliner of its era, the Comet is something special - because it was the world's first jet airliner.

First flying in 1949 (on July 27th De Haviland unvield the DH-106 Comet aircraft). The plane was a 36 passenger jet aircraft. Its cruising speed was 490 MPH. The Comets service was cut short after a number of them crashed in the lated 50's

the Comet offered unrivalled comfort for the 36-40 passengers it carried - a pressurised cabin and was a wonder of the age.

But bold innovation meant a step into the unknown for the Comet's designers, and the aircraft's reputation was damaged by a series of mystery accidents, which usually resulted in the deaths of everyone on board.

Comets were grounded in 1954 after two Comets, including the first production aircraft, crashed in quick succession. Extensive tests eventually discovered that metal fatigue of the pressure cabin was responsible, and the fault was cured on remaining Comets.

But the damage had been done and by the time the Comet re-entered service, Boeing's 707 had appeared and cornered the market.

Comets lived on, though, and the aircraft was later used by the RAF as the basis for its Nimrod early warning aircraft...

It was the first jet passenger plane, but suffered from crashes because cracks developed around the corners of the windows. By the time they figured out what was wrong, the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 had taken over the market. There is a Comet in the Museum of Flight restoration shop at Paine field in Everett Washington. I just saw it in July.
