I'd like to suggest that the so-called "health" reasons for scriptural prohibitions is so much hokum. I know it's become quite the vogue to think that, for example, the Jewish taboo on pork had something to do with disease. But more than likely it was a totemic issue. After all, Yahweh could just as easily have commanded that they cook Miss Piggy well before munching on her. (Actually, most foods in that area were cooked to smithereens anyway.) I really doubt people were having problems with pork. Actually if he'd wanted to prevent disease, he forbid gefilte fish recipes - that can give you tapeworm.

I can't even get anyone to agree that trichinosis even existed in that part of the world at the time.

Not possible. Chickens are far to imbedded in society, and religion to be forbiden. Not just for the medicinal value of chicken soup, but they also serve as a great description of many people...brawk brawk...and also the riddles, my God how would have religion ever got off the ground with out the chicken/egg issue?

no, because that isn't how animals were decided upon as edible. No one was watching sample groups try different animals and outloawing the ones where someone got sick.
