9:00 a.m. -- “It was the third hour when they crucified him.” Mark (15:25)

or

2:00 p.m. -- Jesus was not crucified until after the sixth hour! John (19:14-15)

Seems to be some confusion

It occured sometime before sunset, as the Jews could not have buried him or done anthing after sunset as Passover starts.

It's hard to say what the "hours" are. Hours after sunrise, hours after noontime, hours before sunset.

Need to do a study of timekeeping back then to know for sure.

One thing is for sure, he was captured late night or early morning, taken to the Pharises, then to pilate, then to Herod who lived a bit aways (some people say that's a days ride by camel round trip or longer) then taken back to Pilate, then beaten, then crusified.

It was probably close to the start of twiight. Such trips could not take place any sooner!

Sundown was probably around 7 pm by our current reckoning. Maybe as late as 8 pm.

Sun rise around 5 in the morning. It was a long day for them being so near the Equator and it being almost the first day of spring.

It is clear from the Bible however, taht the Last Supper was the day before Passover (preparation day) and that he died before Passover started (a Thursday afternoon) and the following day (a friday) was the normal Sabbath (friday night to saturday night) and that he resurrected on Sunday morning before the rise of the Sun.

Of course these days would be based on the Jewish or Roman calendar, not our current days, but this is the eqivalent.

Some cultures referenced time based on when the sun rose.

While your first citation is correct:

25 It was the third hour when they crucified him. Mark 15:25 (NIV)
***********

Your second citation is out of context.

14It was the day of Preparation of Passover Week, about the sixth hour.
"Here is your king," Pilate said to the Jews.

15But they shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!"
"Shall I crucify your king?" Pilate asked.
"We have no king but Caesar," the chief priests answered.

The writers are describing two separate events. The actual crucifixion and the prequel to the crucifixion.

This is the danger about taking things out of context.

Whenever it happened, I'd say "God's timing is perfect".

how do you get a 5 hour difference between the third hour and sixth hour? Isn't that only three hours difference? I'm an atheist, but maybe the discrepancy is due to before and after the torture part. Just a guess, ask a fundie to be sure.

Well, in the end, is there ever really a good time to be crucified? Besides, that would not exactly be the first instance of the "good book" contradicting itself...it's written by man, after all.

John was giving the time in Roman time. The Hebrews and Romans reckoned time differently.
