If your hair is a light black you should get a darker color to do your highlights. Just as if it was dark you should get a lighter color. Any color would be cute test a color out on hair that is the same as your and see what it would like the longer you leave it in the darker it will get so dont live it int hat long

It sounds like your haircolor is gorgeous. Don't mess it up with highlights. I love dark hair, it looks so pretty with your kind of skin color. But if you really insist on the highlights, then nothing too light would look good. Maybe some caramel colored streaks, or a reddish brown color.

one to two levels lighter. anything more will look like stripes. if you have no color on your hair now then this should be no problem for the stylist. if you have color on your hair now and need the highlights then the stylist has to use a higher lift product such as bleach. color will not lift color.
if the latter is true then have her lighten your hair then deposit color over the highlights to get the desired result
good luck

Women with dark hair should not go more than three shades lighter than their natural color with highlights. In terms of lowlights, tones of red and tortoise (a blend of copper and gold) colors work best. When brown hair lightens naturally, it has to go through shades of red first. Thus red lowlights make highlights look much more natural on brunettes

My sister's friend has black hair, and she recently got purple highlights. It looked really good, and it wasn't obnoxiously noticeable.

A reddish brown would look great. Your stylist will tell you what would look good when you go in, too :)
