What you've heard is undoubtedly a popular belief across almost all the religions.
But to your delight, what you think is also very much true....
If you lead a good life, in the sense help the needy, give away alms to the poor, try to counsel and rehabilitate feelings of self worth in a potentially depressed patient, provide that extra smile on the hungry faces by feeding them atleast a complete meal, and do some of these similar tasks and while doing them if you don't feel proud tat you are great to have done them, then you are on the right track and there's no specific need for you to call yourself religoius.
If you don't hurt any one with your words, if you are polite, if you take care to listen to other's perspective and are really kind hearted, even God will help you and provide you with the best of opportunities to further your goals of helping his people.
Thanks

Cornelius was a good man, both in the eyes of the Jews and the Romans (Acts 10). However, it wasn't enough: He needed to call for Peter to tell him the words by which he might be saved (Acts 11:14).
If we could go to heaven just by being good, then we would be saved by works only, and the Bible doesn't teach that.
Of course, the Bible doesn't teach salvation by faith only, either (James 2:24). We're not saved by anything "only," but by doing the will of the Father (Matthew 7:21). See the link below.

I think you are absolutely right. Live by the golden rule ( Do unto others as you would have them do unto you ) and you will have no problems. There are too many faiths across our world to say that one is more right than another so being a good person has to be what counts most.

No it's not what counts, because who determines what a "GOOD" life is? There is no set standard for what a good life is, thats a matter of opinion. But if you believe in God, it's set, its something that can be proven or not proven, it's not a matter of opinion, you either believe in God or you don't, and believeing in him is the only way to get to Heaven!

if someone followed a good life + kind hearted = religous. how can u be good but unreligious. i think those 2 come together. u be good because u believe that u should not do bad things. if u do bad things then it ll be sinfull. thinking about avoiding sins will make u religious.
i cannot imagine ppl do good deeds for no reason. they must expect some kind of rewards for example if they respect other ppl they expect others to respect them. so who is going to give the reward? must be some1 better than juz a mere human, which leads us to believe in the existance of God. then we ll become religious.

I am not a Christian, so I don't follow the belief that only those who love Jesus will go to Heaven. I think that that religion one signs up for means nothing compared to the life they lived. I have known many evil Christians who believe in Jesus and love him a whole bunch, and according to them they have their pass to heaven while nice, altruistic, selfless people will not. A just Deity would not allow this to happen.

well i am spiritual so i know what is and isnt right for me. its simple really. lead a good life never harm anyone and never hurt anyone in anyway and you get into heaven with a big fat reward for following your heart and not a book as some christians do. i for one have been to heaven many times and back again since i have never harmed anyone or even done harm against mankind but when it comes down to it you have to be good to your self first and for most.
good things come from good moral values. what i see when those who hate or even treat others wrong are less likely to get into heaven since you are to love all as equals and hate the ones who do evil against you.

If he does not believe in any religion, then of course there really is no heaven for him.
This is a very complicated thing to understand for people who have different beliefs...
They would ask: "when you reach heaven, then what's next?"
or "What is up from heaven?"
But according to the teachings of the Catholic Church those who are ignorant are excempted and are automatically sent to heaven.
Just like babies, who are ignorant.
