If she's been pushing, (looks like she's trying to poo) for more than an hour, get her to the vet immediately.

The normal gestation period is sixty-three days, but many Chi's have their puppies 2-3 days earlier. Puppies can survive as early as the 57 days, and as late as 72 days, but if a Mom has not had her puppies by day 63 days ALWAYS INFORM YOUR VET.

In the first stage the Mom becomes restless and licks her genitals, cleaning it for the impending arrival. She may pee a lot, ruffle up bedding (scratching with her front paws etc) to make a nest just before the arrival of the first Pup. She will refuse food, and may vomit. This can last up to 24 hours. Usually it lasts just a few hours.

The second stage is when the pains change to strong contractions you can see, and by placing the hand upon the tummy you can feel the hardening of the uterus. These last a few seconds and she rests in between. This continue until a pup is born. The first sign of the pups impending birth will be a hardening under the Mom's tail. Never allow her to push in the second stage for more than 2 hours without getting help from the Vet.
