Because they constantly drag the religious through the mud in forums like this one. For the most part, they are rude and obnoxious and their messages are intended to inspire some kind of negative reaction or they just ridicule.
They rarely bring up any arguments that are thought provoking on the subject of atheism, instead they focus on how stupid people must be for believing there is a higher power. Read some atheist posts and try to disprove this.
I can see why that gets bothersome.

I have no problem with Atheists in general. I have Atheist friends, and I believe people have a right to believe, or not believe, in whatever they want. The problem I have with some Atheists is when they get aggressive with their views and start pushing their "there is no God, religious people are stupid, if you worship a God or Gods you are not evolved and are stupid!" views on others. THAT'S when I have a problem. It's the ultimate in hypocrisy cause these will be the same people who will rail against religious people pushing religion on THEM, and yet here they are pushing THEIR views on others just like a religious person. THAT'S when I take issue...and the bad thing is they are even WORSE than the most fanatical religious fundie cause they will base all their arguments on science, "logical reasoning", and the fact that religions should stop pushing their views on other people! Um....pot meet kettle much?
For the record I don't care if they don't believe in anything. I just wish the Atheists HERE would recognize their own hypocrisy.

Religious beliefs are usually pretty central to how one find's meaning in one's life. It's not just a personal preference. It defines people and how they live.
For some people, encountering another person who believes differently shakes them up. It may make them doubt their own beliefs, which is scary. How do I know that what I believe is right? In response they may try to convert the other person because the there will be one less person in the world to cast doubt on their own beliefs.
For others, they are sure that their way is right and want as many people as possible to know the right way. People do often convert to different religions, and atheists can come to believe in God, just like those who once believed in God can become atheists.

It's their job to convert atheists, they must go into the deepest wilds to find natives to convert, They must preach the message in the streets, they must convert others to the beliefs of the lasting rewards of heaven so that they too may be saved.
I don't mind the message
or even the messenger.
What gets me is the belief that because I am an atheist, I am somehow less of a person than I could be.

some atheists are assholes. Some actually do raise good points in their questioning which the hardcore born agains and bible thumpers can't imagine why someone would ask since the answer is obviously God and if you don't believe it go read the Bible and pray to Jesus. When the athiests say they don't believe in that they get upset. Basically both sides are bothered by the other because they believe radically different things. Myself I don't care what people believe as long as they respect me and my beliefs.

Because Xtians have chosen a theory that made sense to them so they made it a belief... THEIR belief. They are so brainwashed they can't imagine anyone not believing what they believe and THEY WON'T LEAVE US ALONE with their little booklets, scripture quotes... and more vomit. It's THEIR vomit!
Why should they care what anyone else thinks or believes. Athiests DO NOT start the conversations... it's alway the 'glossy eyed' Xtians.
I'd like to know the last time any one of them met with someone who came back from the dead to tell them all about it.

I know! I'm Christian, but it's frustrating when people think "These atheists (or any other person) aren't EXACTLY the same as me so I don't like them." Everyone is basically the same, and religion doesn't matter.

because some people are challenged to question and defend their own beliefs.... and many are not up for the challenge. some are content with believing- rather than knowing. those who KNOW God, don't feel threatened by outside beliefs. (non-denominational)

most athiests don't know how to leave the topic alone. when they argue with a christian we (christians) ask questions to better understand and the athiest just wants to scream and hollar. To better understand one another we must ask questions. Seems to me the athiest has more issues.
