When I was but a lad, I had a after-school job in a busy grocery store. One evening when I was picking up some overtime in the insanely busy Passover season, some old shifty-looking diamond retailer rolls up and asks me,
"Where do you keep the matzo?"
"What's matzo?" I asked, ever so innocently.
"I don't know. What's matzo with you?" he shouted, and started cackling maniacally.

Was he putting a curse on me?

You became the butt off his joke and He was just using his position as a higher class memeber to put in your place or that is his view. That is where respect for all people applies. Respect the cashier and the guy at the gas pump. Respect the homeless for they might not have chosen the path they walk but walk societies cruel road.
