A digital SLR is just like a film SLR, except it doesn't use film! SLR means single lens reflex. The camera uses a series of mirrors to reflect the image from the lens to the viewfinder.

I have the Nikon D70 and I love it!!! Nikon makes the best cameras, no matter what the Canonheads tell you!

dpreview is a great site.
i too would recommend the Nikon D70. i personally think it picks up colors better than canon. it also has a stronger, more durable body than the canon (which makes it heavier than the plastic-y feel of the canon). but Canons are no doubt great cameras too, and i don't really know how to say which one is better than the other, it just depends on your preference and what you plan to use it for. is indoor photography more relevant to you than outdoor photography? etc etc.
do your research well, because there ARE differences between canon and nikon.

also, there is another dSLR called the Nikon D50. if you like the D70 but don't want to spend that much money, the D50 is practically the same thing. it's just a smaller, more affordable, easier to use (because of better auto focus and motion tracking) version of the same D70. the body is a little smaller, but both cameras have 6.1 MP and the same digic II image processor, etc etc. the difference in picture quality is indeciperable.

I haven't been impressed with that series of Nikon cameras. I am currently using the Fuji Finepix S3Pro. Its built on a Nikon body so all Nikon accessories work on it.

dpreview is a good place to read about most every model. personally, i like Canon better because the ability to take better pictures in low light, low noise (using higher ISO). if you take a lot of indoor pictures, you'll like something like the Canon XT.

also if you have any lenses, you'll want to pick between the Nikon, Canon, or other platform.
