it doesn't happen very often but I sometimes get a pain in my chest, sometimes it is a dull ache and sometimes it is a stabbing pain, been happening since I was 13 (ish), parents said it was indigestion or growing pains (well I'm 23 now so that's been rules out). any suggestions what it could be??

If you are having any pains in your chest then you really should see your doctor, there are many reasons why people have chest pain and they are not always heart related, you get chest pain with hiatus hernias, gall bladder problems, indigestion, ulcers, back pain can be differed and cause chest pain, it might well be something simple that can get sorted quite quickly or it might well be something which needs more lengthy treatment, you really do need to see your doctor about this, maybe before you go you could keep a diary of what the pain is like (say on a 1-10 scale), what time it is, how long pain lasted, where the pain is, is there any other pain anywhere else, what you were doing at the time, does anything you do ease the pain, as well as these it would be worth keeping a food diary, what you ate, time you ate, portion size, these are things that would really help your GP

With out an exam and knowing just were the pain is I could not give you a good guess. See an MD or a APN. If money is a problem use a free clinic. Or failing all else show up at the ER of a teaching hospital. Mornings are better. You need your chest listened to a Blood Pressure check and an EKG. Better to be sure.

Chances are its not dangerous. Surprisingly, many people have the same kinds of pains you describe---especially those stabbing type ones in our teen years.
Of course, if you are worried, see a doctor, but as long as the pain isn't accompanied by shortness of breath, fainting/lightheadedness, weakness, or numbness, you are likely fine. Aches and pains are normal for people, but when they are in our chests or heads, we tend to get more scared. And then we seem to focus on it more and make it worse.
But by all means, get checked by a doc if you want a thorough heart check.

It could be a number of things & it's not good to assume what it might be. Go see your Dr. & tell him what's going on. If by chance he says there's nothing wrong, get a second & even third opinion.
