Are you speaking of G-d? I think he gets quite a bit of respect nowadays, considering the vast amount of religious fundamentalists throughout the bible belt.

I read that and think you've got it backwards, but then I don't believe in blind love or love at first site. Sometimes I'm not even sure I believe in love and wonder if respect is love. The irrationality of the whole thing eludes me, I can't get my head around it sometimes. Then again, perhaps that's the point. I think I may perhaps owe you two points, I didn't really answer the question, did I?

There can be no love where there is no respect. There can, however, be respect without love. This is the basis for arranged marriages. First, you get to know and respect the spouse picked out for you by people who know and care about you both. Love comes later. The concept of "love without respect" has a real name: it is "lust". That is where you wish to use and consume your object of interest, a goal quite opposite to that of love. If I had my choice and could have only one, I would prefer for people around me to respect me rather than love me, because you can respect even your enemies, if they have integrity and behave honorably even in conflict.

I don't believe either.. you can't have one without the other.. even people you just respect you love a little bit in some way. Not the rethorical I want to have your babies love.. but there's some part of you that loves people you respect.. and you can't really love someone unless you respect them.

Seriously i think that is crap. You have to respect in order to love. It goes both ways. If one person doesnt respect the other then it will only become worse as time progresses.

Scientists know only what loves does, Love properly applied, could virtually empty our asylum, our prison, our hospitals, Love is the touchstone of psychiatric treatment. Love can be fostered,Extended, Used to subjugate hate and thus cure diseases. More and more clearly every day, out of biology, anthropology, sociology, history, economics, psychology, the plain common sense, the necessary mandate of survival, that we love love our neighbors as ourselves is being confirmed and reaffirmed, Love Now to the laboratory with love, Where love is there God is. To love is virtually to know; to know is not virtually to love. Real friend are those who, when you've made a fool of yourself.don't feel that you you've done a permanent job.

There is big difference between love and lust or love and lure. Lust and/or lure are object or subject specific and therefore do not suffice respect. Love is natural without strings and/or preconditions attached. Thus love necessitates respect though mode of applicability of such respect may vary from one relationship to the other.

I don't believe that at all, but I'd be interested in hearing the why of it from someone who does. I think love conveys the highest respect. How can you stay in love with someone if you don't respect them?

I don't believe it! If you love someone then you are going to feel compelled to respect that person, you are going to respect him because you love him...
But then, if you believe that it is possible to hurt the person you truly love, then it could happen that love and respect don't go together.
