When the invasion of Polish mainly immigrants began with the accession of a number of East European countries, many of these immigrants said they wanted to only stay here for a short time before returning to their home. Now according to a recent survey many of these same immigrants want to stay. The government at the time said the immigrants wouldn't stay. Now it looks like the government has yet again lied to us. They said at the time only 13,000 immigrants from these countries would come over. Well we now have way over 500,000. You just cannot trust the government. Kick Bliar out!!!

CarlR, Well that's the point really. Even now the Government DOESN'T really know how many of them there are. Personally I think they will be good for the country especially if they stay and pay taxes to fund my retirement. They do have a much better work ethic and I think there will be fewer integration problems because they are white and their culture European.

I agree immigrants should be made to learn the language and if they don't should be deported.

The fundamental problem is the lack of management by our government. Polish workers mostly do a good job and are pleasant. The problem I See is in the 1095's when we allowed and cultivated Jamaican and other immigrants no one thought it through. They allowed a number of Ghetto towns that became home to immigrants. There was no integration at that time. We cannot allow that to happen again. This needs management of the situation. Again this pathetic government is not doing the basics of integration right. If we allow 500,000 people to move in live in ghetto's then we are storing up problems for the future. We should stop immigration now. Take out the illegals and send them to there homelands. Then have a sensible discussion on how to move forward. Once that is done take in immigrants again in an orderly manner.

European Union, EEA and Swiss citizens are free to come to Britain and work -- as are Commonwealth citizens with a British-born grandparent.

These are not subject to any real control and are not thought of as "immigrants" except perhaps by the tabloid press.

Unlike most European countries, Britain does not require migrants who come to Britain as a matter of right to register with the police or the town hall or anywhere else. As a result there are no real statistics on who is here.

In fact, Britain does not know who its citizens are, unless they buy British passports (which dual nationals, most of whom are also Irish citizens but who could have any second nationality, need not have) or register to vote (but the Voters Register is so sloppy that it includes millions (hundreds of thousands anyway) of people who are not British citizens but whose names were put on the register by the part-time employees who visited their address).

But you ask: do East European migrants want to stay here? Probably most want to make enough money to buy a flat, or to get married, or to start a life back home. Many of those will never reach their goal, or will change their mind after a few years, or will marry and stay forever. Exactly as economic migrants from the Commonwealth did after British governments killed off its young men in their millions in two World Wars.

These people are mainly Polish. There are (as Michael Caine might say) "thousands of 'em".

I have about 15 living on my street in 4-5 houses. This isn't ideal but they have a strong work-ethic and I prefer them to english chavs.

I can't really complain anyway because my girlfriend is Czech!

Totally agree!

We have far to many immigrants here. The one's who were honest from the start, saying they want to stay here, and were accepted should be welcome to stay. The ones who said they only wanted to spend a few years here should be told to leave after that time period is up, and illegal immigrants should be deported immediately.

The ones who stay should learn English too. I've had countless problems with immigrants who can't even speak the local language!

One lady, who worked for a rail network served me a while ago in London. She was African of origin. When I tried to buy a ticket from her booth, to a place in Shropshire (as my home station's ticket booths were closed that day, due to maintenance), she didn't understand me, and ended up getting the manager over to assist her. I spoke clearly, and my accent is not difficult to understand, but she struggled. I wouldn't have minded too much, but I had to be at the other side of London in 15 mins! I wasn't happy, but had no time to complain. I ended up sprinting through the underground with an 80 litre bergen on my back!

My mum works in a doctor's surgery in Kent, and she has had to hire Punjab and Afghan speaking translators as some of the enrolled patients don't speak a word of English. As they are in the UK, they should learn the bloody language!!!

There, rant over...

"Kick them all out".
Fine, then kick out all the dirty political refugees (emptying prisons) and economic refugees (gold digging emigrants) that Britain has puked up all over the globe including US, Canada, Australia, NZ, South Africa, and kick out all their decendants as well.
