Follow the South Western Freeway / Hume Highway towards Melbourne for about 400 kms. You are looking for the turn off to the town of Gundagai. From Gundagai head south for 40kms to town of Tumut. Follow the Snowy Mountains Highway S/E for a few kms and there you are.
Total distance approx 450kms from Sydney.

It is in the south-east of Australia.

The previous directions are wrong if you want to get to the real high country, or at least are a long way round. Drive to Canberra, then Cooma then Jindabyne, and follow the signs to Thredbo. It is almost exactly 500 km from Sydney. The park itself is big. To get to the north end turn onto the Snowy Mountains Highway just after Cooma.

Mount Kosciuszko itself is 6.5 gentle kilometres from the top of the Thredbo Chairlifts. At the moment it is snow covered, but it is a pleasant cross country ski. This ski season has been a shocker, so it will be OK to walk by about the middle of October.
